WE DID IT !!!
We are Row for IMPACT, a team of 3 women rowers; Debby Bijl, Bettina de Wild and Iris Noordzij. We will participate in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2021, also known as the World’s Toughest Row!
Our goal is to make as much impact for the Mentelity Foundation and to set a new world record, namely fastest all-female trio across the Atlantic Ocean.
Debby Bijl, our captain! Always on the run, helping others, willing to go further, become better, crossing boundaries. Eager to be in contact with people, do it together, stimulate each other, help each other.
With the support of family and friends she will experience a new life changing challenge.
Bettina de Wild wants to make a difference for people. That’s why she became a physiotherapist and also works with mentaly challenged people. Always looking for new challenges and to make more miles in a rowing boat. For her, TWAC is the ultimate challenge and dream.
Bettina de Wild
Iris Noordzij already completed the crossing in 2020 with The Atlantic Dutchesses and they became the first ever Dutch Ladies Team to make the crossing. They won the Female Class and the Murden Trophy.
It was such an amazing experience that Iris wants to go again and this time with a new team of three women.
QUEEN OF HEARTS
The Queen is already a successful lady. On her maiden voyage she managed to set 2 records; fastest female 4 and first dutch female 4 to cross any ocean set by the Atlantic Dutchesses. Her goal for 2021? Do her utmost best to help set the next record; Fastest female 3 to cross the Atlantic ocean.
48 IS THE NUMBER WE WILL LIVE BY
48, the age of Bibian Mentel at time of passing
48 days to cross the Atlantic, breaking the world record women 3
€ 48.000, raising for the Mentelity Foundation, supporting the JUMP project, which enables children to get their personal adapted prosthesis so they can join a sport of their choice.
48, our angle number – “think positive, think in possibilities, follow your intuition” - Bibian Mentel. She lived by these rules and her words will inspire us continuously during our row across the Atlantic.
What is the JUMP Project?
JUMP - Junior Modular Prothesis
In the Netherlands, approximately 10,000 children and young adults are unnecessarily often at home. Due to the low reimbursements provided by health insurance, the majority of prosthesis users are only reimbursed for one limited prosthesis every five years. However, someone with a prosthetic leg needs different feet to be able to walk, swim, play sports or wear high heels for once. Extra legs are not reimbursed and must be purchased by the user. An extra leg costs on average €10,000.
For an able-bodied person, this would mean that you are only allowed to buy one pair of shoes once every five years. So if you choose ski boots, for example, you should also wear them to work. If you choose smart shoes, you can't go on winter sports, play football, tennis or go to the beach for five years without smart shoes on your feet.
The JUMP, the Junior Modular Prothesis, is going to change this. The Mentelity Foundation has developed a prosthesis in which the children and young adults are given a leg with several feet that they can exchange themselves in a simple way, just like an able-bodied person would exchange shoes. This is not possible with current prostheses. Besides the fact that the user does not have different feet, the user cannot exchange the feet himself, due to poor technology.
The Mentality Foundation in The Netherlands started the JUMP project, which enables children to get their personal adapted prosthesis so they can join a sport of their choice. Being able to participate in sports makes an enormous positive impact on the lives of disabled children.
Inspired by the legacy of distinguished paralympic athlete and founder of The Mentelity Foundation, Bibian Mentel, we are determined to take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge to make as much IMPACT as possible by contributing to this inspiring charity's JUMP (JUniorModular Prosthesis) project.
